About Edible Ozarkansas
Who We Are
Edible Ozarkansas is the celebratory voice of the local food movement in Northwest Arkansas. Our mission is to nourish, support, educate, and celebrate the local food community, season by season.
We are also part of the large family of publications known as Edible Communities, which has won numerous awards including being collectively named the James Beard Foundation Publication of the Year in 2011.
Our nonprofit mission
Edible Ozarkansas is unique in that it is published by a nonprofit organization, Feed Communities.
Feed Communities is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2012 with the vision of supporting and expanding local food systems as a means of facilitating durable solutions for food security.
The team works with individuals, organizations, schools, universities, government agencies, and foundations to create sustainable partnerships for increasing access to healthy foods and improving healthy food choices.
The business model is set up so that once Edible Ozarkansas is solvent and profitable, revenue from the magazine will help fund these food security efforts.
Feed Communities hosts a variety of programs (often in conjunction with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Northwest campus), all with the aim of supporting local producers and promoting equal access to healthy foods.
Farm to Preschool
One of the country’s first Farm to Preschool programs, ours serves as an extension of Farm to School, a nationwide program that aims to integrate experiential nutrition and garden activities into early education, so as to influence eating habits and lifestyle choices of young children.
Plant A Row
Food pantries provide services to one in five Arkansans who struggle with food insecurity. With food provisions that consist mostly of shelf-stable food items, our local pantries and their clients would love to see fresh local produce made more readily available.
This program encourages community members to grow an extra row, raised bed, or container of produce and donate it, thereby directly supporting this need for fresh and healthy produce. Feed Communities is partnered with local food pantries who are ready and eager to accept these fresh produce donations.
The Ozarkansas Tool Library
The Ozarkansas Tool Library is a partnership between Feed Communities and the Fayetteville Public Library in order to provide residents of Northwest Arkansas of all income levels with access to tools and knowledge, thereby empowering the community to create a sustainable future. This is a library that has both books and tools useful for gardening, farming, and basic construction tasks. It operates like a traditional library, lending out, for free, a wide variety of garden implements to residents in our community.
The vision of the Feed Communities Neighborhood Garden is to create long-term food security by providing community members the opportunity and knowledge to grow organic, safe, nutritious, and sustainable food in a communal environment.
We invite all community members to grow with us regardless of gardening experience, and families are welcome!
Feed Communities is partnered with Lifestyles Inc. for weekly cooking classes with a handful of their clients. Lifestyles Inc. is an organization dedicated to providing quality services and education for individuals with disabilities. Feed Communities has worked with Lifestyles for three years, preparing healthy, vegetarian recipes with their clients.
