Spring treat: Mulberries

Watch the sidewalks, car roofs, and driveways of your neighborhood in late spring and early summer. When purple splats begin to appear, it is mulberry season. Morus rubra is native to the eastern United States and makes edible fruits that appeal to wildlife, backyard chickens, and people.

Description: a fragile, juicy, reddish-purple fruit with a mild, sweet flavor

Available months: May-June

Where to find: on medium to tall trees, often along fencerows, abandoned areas, and edges of woods. Ripe fruits release easily when picked. Placing a tarp or sheet on the ground and shaking a smaller tree can give a quick harvest.

How to use: like blueberries or blackberries, for example, in pie, jam, and muffins. They will not keep fresh for long but can be frozen or dehydrated for later use. The small, green stems that remain attached are edible.
